Heat Treating Capabilities
Controlled Thermal Processing for Critical Applications
Heat Treating Capabilities at Sypris Technologies
Sypris Technologies delivers tightly controlled, production-scale heat treating processes designed to meet critical metallurgical requirements across high-performance applications. Our in-house thermal processing capabilities are fully integrated with upstream forging and machining operations, enabling us to control microstructure, hardness, and mechanical properties with repeatable precision.
We specialize in heat treating heavy-duty components that require strict adherence to fatigue resistance, wear performance, and dimensional stability under load-bearing and cyclical stress conditions.
In-House Thermal Processing Capabilities
Our facility is equipped with an array of batch and continuous heat treat systems configured for high-throughput, high-repeatability operations. All processes are engineered to conform to industry standards including AMS 2750 and CQI-9.
Core processes include:
- Quench & Temper (Q&T): Controlled hardening and tempering cycles to achieve targeted strength, toughness, and ductility
- Normalization: Grain refinement and stress relief to improve machinability and structural integrity
- Annealing: Tailored softening processes to enhance formability or prepare for further processing
- Stress Relieving: Post-machining or welding treatments to reduce residual stresses and distortion
- Isothermal Heat Treatment: Applied where dimensional stability and microstructure uniformity are critical
Available quench media:
- Water
- Oil
- Polymer (aqueous solutions for controlled cooling rates)
- Salt (available for select legacy processes)
Equipment Infrastructure
Sypris operates a range of programmable, computer-controlled furnaces equipped with data logging and real-time process monitoring. Our systems ensure uniform temperature distribution, rapid heat-up rates, and precise soak time management.
Furnace types include:
- Sealed batch furnaces with integral quench tanks
- Continuous belt furnaces for high-volume components
- Vacuum furnaces for clean, oxidation-free hardening (available via strategic partners)
- Salt bath systems for specialized thermal cycles
- Controlled atmosphere furnaces (endothermic and nitrogen-based) for carburizing or oxidation control
All equipment is regularly calibrated and certified to meet pyrometry requirements per AMS 2750 standards.
Process Control & Compliance
Our thermal processes are backed by rigorous quality protocols, ensuring traceability and process validation from raw material to final product.
Thermal process oversight includes:
- Furnace uniformity surveys (TUS) and system accuracy tests (SAT)
- Full batch traceability and data retention
- Hardness testing (Rockwell, Brinell) post-treatment
- Microstructure evaluation and case depth verification
- Statistical Process Control (SPC) and FMEA-driven process design
