Precision Machining for Demanding Applications
Precision Machining at Sypris Technologies
At Sypris Technologies, machining is executed as a high-precision, tightly controlled operation designed to support demanding tolerance, surface finish, and geometry requirements. Our multi-axis CNC platforms, integrated quality systems, and high-capacity throughput make us an ideal partner for complex, production-scale component manufacturing.
We specialize in machining forged and bar stock components for drivetrain, structural, and transmission-critical applications across automotive, commercial vehicle, off-highway, and industrial markets.
CNC Machining Capabilities
Our facilities are equipped with advanced horizontal and vertical machining centers configured for cellular and line-based production. We utilize both standalone and multi-spindle platforms, supporting simultaneous operations and reduced takt times.
Core machining processes include:
- CNC Turning Centers: Multi-axis turning with live tooling and sub-spindle capabilities for one-pass production
- CNC Machining Centers: 3-, 4-, and 5-axis vertical and horizontal machining of complex geometries and contours
- Vertical and Horizontal Milling: High-efficiency material removal and surface prep for tight flatness and perpendicularity tolerances
- Precision Grinding: Including surface, centerless, and cylindrical grinding to sub-micron tolerances
- Boring and Reaming: Precision internal geometry control for critical alignment and fit
- Threading & Tapping: Controlled torque specs for both internal and external threading applications
- Spline Forming & Broaching: In-house broaching and form cutting for powertrain and drivetrain component compatibility
- Deep Hole Drilling: High-aspect-ratio drilling with tight concentricity requirements
Equipment Infrastructure
Our equipment strategy is built on reliability, repeatability, and throughput. We deploy high-speed CNCs from industry leaders (Mazak, Okuma, Haas, etc.) with automated part handling, in-cycle gauging, and tool wear compensation systems.
Operational highlights:
- Lights-out machining capabilities with robotic loading/unloading
- Real-time spindle monitoring and predictive maintenance protocols
- Palletized systems and quick-change tooling for high-mix, low-volume flexibility
- Dedicated prototype-to-production cells for rapid industrialization
Quality & Metrology
Dimensional control is integrated across the production process through both in-line and offline inspection methodologies. We maintain AS9100D, IATF 16949, and ISO 9001 certifications across all machining operations.
Quality assurance includes:
- High-precision CMM inspection (manual and programmable)
- Optical and laser scanning for complex surface validation
- SPC integration with real-time feedback loops
- Tool calibration, gauge R&R, and regular MSA protocols
- First article inspection (FAI) and PPAP documentation
Materials & Markets
We regularly machine a wide range of steels (carbon, alloy, microalloy), as well as hardened materials post-heat treat. Our applications span:
- Drivetrain and suspension systems (axles, yokes, housings)
- Structural components for heavy vehicles and industrial platforms
- Precision interfaces in power transmission and mechanical linkages
- Complex subassemblies with tight geometric tolerancing (GD&T)
Strategic Advantages
- Vertical Integration: Forging + machining under one roof ensures end-to-end control
- Lean Manufacturing: Kaizen-driven continuous improvement with TPM, SMED, and 5S implementation
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Engineering support from print review to process optimization
Key Benefits
- Tight tolerance precision for complex components
- Multi-axis CNC machining for complex geometries
- High-volume production capacity
- Comprehensive quality control procedures
- In-process inspection capabilities
